Midcoast Friends Meeting welcomes Ecumenical Diaper Bank

The Midcoast Friends Meeting has welcomed on its campus in Damariscotta the construction of a permanent storage space for the diaper supply of the Ecumenical Diaper Bank. The Diaper Bank provides a supplementary supply of diapers to low income families to enable them to change their children’s diapers with appropriate frequency.
The Diaper Bank is staffed by nearly 20 volunteers from 7 area churches. Volunteers help run an annual diaper drive, Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, repackage diapers into packets of 15-20 each, and distribute them on Tuesday mornings at the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Newcastle.
More than 8,000 diapers were distributed last year and the expectation for this year is 10,000. For the past three years the remote storage of diapers has been in a classroom generously offered by the Damariscotta Baptist Church. Many people join us from "away," either by retiring here to Maine or joining us during their summer sojourns. Plus we have a number of members and attenders who come from a different faith background. Questions and contrasts are bound to pop up.
Julia started attending our meeting for worship in mid-winter. Raised in an extremely conservative faith practice, she arrived in our space and "settled in" with us quite quickly. happy to have found us. She is young, thoughtful, eloquent, and full of Spirit. Like many of us convinced Friends, Julia sometimes remarks on how different we are from what she experienced in her past. She often contrasts the pervasive, prescriptive rules and limited choices she has moved away from with what she is learning about Quaker practice.
